Gernot Wieland

(Horn, Austria, 1968)

Gernot Wieland (Horn, Austria, 1968) lives and works in Berlin, mainly with film and lecture performance. All his works are based on research, memory and narration. The works bring together historical reports with personal recollections and scientific facts, fictional and real elements thereby develop stories between exciting sobriety and tragicomic incidents and develop a sense of the uncanny, mostly in ironic and absurd forms. The works are characterized by a gripping, poetic sobriety and follow associative narrative structures, which include for example stories about a parrot, a dancer, psychoanalytic sessions, the history of poverty, drones, depression in animals, political events and childhood memories. In 2017 he won the MOSTYN Open 20 award.  The artist participated in "Symposium on Humour and Absurdity", Nida Art Colony, Lithuania (2019); "EMAF – European Media Art Festival", Osnabrück (2019); Belmacz, London (solo, 2019); Vdrome, London (solo, 2019); "IFFR - International Film Festival Rotterdam" (2019); "Monitoring - Exhibition for Time Based Media Art", Kasseler Kunstverein, Kassel (2018); "Zeitspuren", Centre d ́art Pasquart, Biel/Bienne (2018), "Shame", Künstlerhaus Bremen (2018); "The Ashtray Show West", Belmacz, London (2018); OGR, Torino (2018); "res·o·nant", Contribution to a Sound Installation, Jewish Museum Berlin (2018); "Ideal-Types" at HE.RO, Amsterdam (2018); "Survival Kit 9", LCCA – Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art, Riga (2017); "The Museum of Modern Comedy in Art – A Proposal", Projects Art Centre, Dublin (2017); "MOSTYN Open 20", Llandudno, Wales (2017); "9th Norwegian Sculpture Biennial", Vigeland Museum, Oslo (2017); "33.
